Cradle of the Civilizations

Welcome to Turkey... This is the
country where the eastern and the
western civilizations meet in a great
harmony. It is like an open air museum
of various important civilizations which
flourished on this land since 9,000 B.C.
It would be a great mistake to consider
Turkey as only a historical place. It is
also a cultural and artistic melting pot of
all its rich past. The people, living in
modern Turkey now, are descendants of
these past civilizations on various ways. Naturally, in Turkey
you will experience an incredible diversity in environment,
history, culture, art, ideas and beliefs. This is in itself may
not be a challenge for the seasoned traveller. After all,
diversity is the most prized feature of favourite destinations.
In Turkey, this diversity is high enough to challenge even the
most experienced eye because it is packed in spaces with
abrupt changes in scenery.

You will explore ancient empires and
centuries old battlefields. During this
fantastic journey you will encounter
many wonders starting from the
fascinating city of Istanbul, previously
known as Constantinople, to treasures
of art and nature in Cappadocia, the
marvels of Pamukkale, the mystery of
Nemrud Dag and the boundless
silences of Mount Ararat. Never to
mention the wonderful western and
southern coast of Turkey. It can only
be described as magnificent... The famous ancient city of
Troia with its wooden horse, just next to Gallipoli; the
famous biblical city of Ephesus, with the house of Virgin
Mary next to it; the birthplace of Homer, Smyrna, now called
Izmir; the Hellenistic splendor of Pergamum are only the
most evident and striking notes in an archaeological context
one cannot help but marvel at and admire.

Turkey as a modern state and a
republic today, is only the last
picture in this marvellous album
of civilizations. It carries many
colours from very ancient
times. Hattis, Hittites,
Phyrgians, Urartians, Lycians,
Lydians, Ionians, Persians,
Macedonians, Romans,
Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans have all held important
places in Turkey's history and its people's culture.

Do not miss the opportunity of exploring and even becoming
a part of this unique country in the earliest occasion. It is one
of our favourites...

MOUNTAINEERING IN TURKEY

A glance at a topographical map of Turkey immediately reveals that this is a country

of mountains. Rising from all four directions mountains encircle the peninsula of
Anatolia. A part of the Alpine-Himalayan mountain range, Turkey has mountainous
regions of different geological formations. The North Anatolian range skirts the
Mediterranean shore.

Turkey's magnificent mountains and forests are mostly undeveloped, existing as
wonderful natural preserves for an extraordinary variety of wildlife, flora and fauna.
Two of Turkey's most famous peaks are volcanoes, both inactive, Mt. Erciyes in
Kayseri in Central Anatolia (3917 m) and Mt. Agri (Mt.Ararat 5137 m) in the east.
Other well-known mountain ranges are the Rize - Kackar (3932 m) in the eastern
Black Sea region, Nigde - Aladag (3756 m) in the Central Taurus range, and the Cilo
and Sat mountains (4136 m) near Hakkari in the Eastern Taurus.

The mountainous nature of the country has influenced its cultural evolution. For centuries, nomads and
semi-nomadic peoples have migrated annually to the fresh pastures of the higher elevations in the summer.
These alpine meadows, called yayla, still represent a firm tie to traditional culture.

For climbers and those interested in the geography of mountains, Turkey offers a wealth of exploration.
Glaciers, volcanoes, and peculiar geological formations such as karst prove irresistible to researchers and
students of geology. The challenging terrain offers great opportunities to aficionados of outdoor sports
who find interesting experiences on the mountains of eastern, central and southern Turkey.
